Biography
Dr. Serge GUIOT (Ph.D., Environmental Sciences, U. Lg., Campus Arlon, Belgium, 1980) is a Principal Research Officer and Leader of the Research Group in Anaerobic technologies and bioprocess control within the Energy, Mining and Environment Research Center of National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in Montreal. His scientific interests and activities since 1987 have focused on the microbial ecology of anaerobic biofilms, hydrogen transfer and control in continuous anaerobic bioreactors, and methanogenic / methanotrophic coupling for degradation of chlorinated compounds. His current research, focused more on biomass and waste conversion to energy, mainly biomethane and biohydrogen, includes the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes and microalgae and the carboxydotrophic fermentation of syngas. He is the author or co-author of more than 180 publications with arbitration, and 8 patents. He recently received Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his tireless research in understanding and enhancing biomethanation processes in more than 30 years of scientific careers.
Theme
- Anaerobic microbiology
Research topics
- Carboxydotrophic fermentation of synthesis gas (syngas, containing essentially CO, H2, and CO2) into methane and/or alcohols.
- Bio-upgrading of CO2/biogas into renewable naturel gas (power-to-gas)
- Direct interspecies electron transfer in anaerobic multispecies biofilms
