Shifting the antiviral paradigm for pathogenic viruses: A tale of two pandemic players – SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus
My talk will focus on two novel classes of host-directed therapeutics – hence the paradigm shift with the current focus by the biotech industry on virally encoded targets (direct-acting therapeutics). I will present our discovery of novel host-directed broad-spectrum antivirals directed at human TMPRSS2 (Nature 2022) and human V-ATPase (unpublished studies: preparation for CELL; UBC patent 2021). Our novel broad-spectrum host-directed therapeutics block the activity of two distinct host factors hijacked by at least two different families of human pathogenic viruses (e.g., SARS-CoV-2 VoCs and influenza A virus)
